National Youth Track Championships 2008

The National Youth Track Championships were held in fine conditions at Orangefield today, with the 50 year old facility looking its best thanks to the hard work of Belfast City Council, who in the past week had trimmed the edges, cut the grass and re-painted the track markings to ensure the 30+ youngsters from around the country had the best possible conditions to compete in.
Ulster took the lions share of the medals, thanks to the hard work put in by the riders and coaches over the winter and also recent Tuesday evening track training sessions.
Stars of the day were a trio of Ulster riders, Under 16 David Neill (Team Madigan) who took a clean sweep of the feature category medals, winning the Sprint, Scratch and Time Trial events. He was matched by Clann Eireann-Linen Green girl Ciara Mulholland who dominated the Under 14 events, and likewise Mark Downey (Banbridge CC) who was unstoppable in the Under 12 ranks.
The Under 10s saw Ballymena newcomer Emma Gordon go home with two Silvers and a Bronze from the female dominated category.
The events were held in fine breezy conditions with the Ulster Track Commission, assisted by Executive members and track helpers, running through a full programme of events with few delays. Cycling Ireland Track Commission chairman Liam Walker was delighted by the event put on by Ulster and commented how the track had improved immensely since his last visit a few years ago. Cycling Ireland Board member Gordon Parker was on hand to assist with the timekeeping, and to present the medals at he conclusion of proceedings.
